Unit description
The purpose of this unit is two-fold. First, to examine the structural arrangements of the organisation of healthcare in Australia. Students will develop an understanding of federal-state relations, and the organisation of acute, primary and aged care services. The challenges for accountability and transparency in the system will be explored. Second, the manifestation of quality and safety in healthcare organisations will be studied. Students will investigate governance, safety, quality, and risk management requirements and systems. Through examining the organisation of care within and across the healthcare system, the interrelationships between organisational and clinical aspects of care will be identified. Topics addressed will include the regulation of healthcare, the role of policy and procedures, patientcentred care approaches, and, future challenges for safety and quality including mental health, Aboriginal health, aged care and integrated care. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

Assessment task 1 – Critical argument (essay)
Task description Title: Critiquing your organisation – Standard 2 Partnering with Consumers

The Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) requires organisations to have structures and processes for consumer and community participation in all aspects of policy development, health service planning and quality improvement processes.

The ‘Partnering with Consumers’ framework (National Model Clinical Governance Framework, ACSQHC 2017, p17- 18) sets out the roles and responsibilities of patients and consumers, clinicians, managers and governing bodies.

Evaluate your organisation’s progress in meeting these requirements; and identifying existing gaps and areas for improvement. What strategies could be applied to meet these gaps or enhance the existing arrangements?

Title: Roles and responsibilities for Clinical Governance – National Model Clinical Governance Framework

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) requires organisations to have structures and processes for effective clinical governance systems. The Commission has provided policy guidance via the National Model of Clinical Governance Framework, (ACSQHC 2017, p.5-10).

This policy document sets out the broad roles of clinical governance for patients and consumers, clinicians, managers and governing bodies.
Evaluate your service’s progress in meeting these requirements; identifying existing gaps; and strategies for improvement.

Assessment task 3 – Infographic

Task description Title: Staff wellbeing: keeping staff safe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for a more holistic understanding of workforce safety — one that builds on physical safety as a foundation, and includes psychological and emotional safety, to create an equitable work environment free of bias or discrimination.

Depict an organisation-wide safety initiative from your workplace that promotes staff physical, psychological and emotional safety.

Explain your role and responsibilities in this initiative.

Two documents are required for this assessment. The infographic should be submitted as a 1-page A4 PDF document, in portrait or landscape.

The infographic follows a modified version of the Infographic style in the AIHSM Writing and Presentation Style Guide (2022), including the purpose of an infographic and tips on how to create an infographic.

To support the infographic, provide a written narrative explaining the details of infographic in a separate Word document. The narrative is your presentation ‘script’ of the infographic to an audience comprised of executives and managers, to educate them on staff safety and wellbeing. The written narrative follows a modified version of the Short Answer style in the AIHSM Writing and Presentation Style Guide.

The content of the infographic should be understood easily without relying on the written narrative for explanation. Support the written narrative with a wide range of relevant and contemporary evidence, including peer-reviewed research, publicly available industry and government literature. Include a reference list at the end of the narrative document.

Design an infographic to explain ONE organisation-wide safety initiatives that promote staff physical, psychological and emotional safety.

Citations and a reference list are required in the narrative document. The reference list at the end of the document is not included in the word count.
