Assignment Task:

Writing tasks

For your second assignment, you will need to complete three writing tasks that demonstrate your ability to:

  1. Summarise a text.

  2. Analyse an event, and write a recommendation

  3. Write an academic argument

1. Descriptive writing - Summary (150-200 words)

Write a summary of a credible text relevant to your topic and/or PAC. The text could be an article from a magazine or academic journal, a chapter from a textbook, or a website. The summary should be approximately 200 words in length (the original text should be at least 1000 words). You do not need to include citations in your summary, however, include the reference for the article you have summarised, and upload the article with your assignment in the submission box on Stream when you have finished. You should otherwise follow academic writing conventions.

2. Persuasive writing - Recommendation (400 words)

Analyse a recent event related to your topic and/or PAC, and then make a recommendation from that event. Recent events could be:

  • changes in indices (such as price changes, or rate rises or falls)

  • new rules, laws, or government policy

  • news stories about key figures, organisations, or companies

Examples of things you could recommend are government action, call for further investigation, or a change in behaviour of the public.

3. Critical writing - Academic argument (500 words)

Often in academic writing you need to put forward an academic argument. An academic argument is a claim, or a series of claims, that are supported by researched evidence. An academic argument at university is an example of a writing task where you may be required to take a position on a topic, such as agreeing or disagreeing with a claim.

For this task, you will need to write 500 words which compares both sides of a controversial issue related to your topic and/or PAC, and then present an argument for one of those sides. Ensure your argument is supported by author citations in the literature. This task is an example of analytical writing. The purpose is to persuade your reader to agree with your argument(s).

As these are academic writing tasks, your audience expects you to follow academic writing rules and conventions. You should also use citations for task 2 and 3 and include a list of references for both. You do not need to write an introduction or conclusion paragraph for any of these tasks (you are not being asked to write an essay or report). Your writing will be assessed on how the paragraphs are structured (including the use of topic and supporting sentences), as well as its cohesiveness, clarity, ability to clearly articulate a point and the strength of the evidence provided.
