Assignment Task

Exam questions
These are the actual questions for this assessment task, which must be completed as directed. Please choose and answer FOUR (4) of the following nine (9) questions on the exam template provided:
1. Only certain harmful behaviours are defined as “crime” by the law. What factors affect whether or not harmful behaviour is criminalised or not? Use examples to illustrate your response.
2. In Australia, what groups are at the highest risk of violent crime and why is this knowledge useful for criminology? Draw on statistics and examples to support your response.
3. The media over-emphasise crimes committed by young people, but this is largely a reflection of ‘moral panic’, rather than the severity of harm or damage caused. Critically discuss in relation to the Australian criminal justice system and relevant data.
4. Is crime a problem primarily of lower classes and could this explain why crime statistics consistently show lower socio-economic groups over-represented in the justice system?
5. The home is a private space often difficult to investigate. In reference to a specific type of crime in the home (e.g. intimate partner violence, child abuse, etc.), identify two strategies that may help to reduce the prevalence of harm in Australia, also noting their limitations.
6. How does the “embeddedness” of regular business activity in the Australian economy create challenges for the prevention and control of white-collar and corporate crime? In your response, identify two examples of business activity that are harmful but are not generally considered criminal.
7. John Braithwaite’s concept of an enforcement pyramid has been presented as an approach for responding to large scale crimes, including environmental harms. Using your knowledge about the challenges of responding to environmental harms and examples, discuss how the enforcement pyramid may help or hinder responses to environmental crime in Australia.
8. “It is pointless to try to criminalise harms committed by States – justice in this area is impossible to achieve.” Critically discuss this statement, using Australian examples to support your answer.
9. “In a given year, cybercrime is more damaging to Australia than terrorism”. Critically discuss this statement, with reference to at least one example.
