Brock-Utne (2007: 526) argues that pupils “learn better when they can use a familiar language for acquiring new knowledge” and that pupils should be able to learn in their home language, or another familiar language, instead of being expected to learn in English. 

Many similar articles with different viewpoints have been written, in respect of the preferred language of educating and learning at schools. This topic has been debated for over two decades in our country and we are to date still at opposing viewpoints with no clear direction as to the best method.

The current language in education policy encourages the foundation phase of schools to use mother tongue instruction followed by a change to English or Afrikaans in the intermediate phase. Schools are however, allowed to make the final decision. Professor Johnathan Jansen and his team undertook research in 2013 in respect of the language of teaching and learning. His research shows that, given the restrictions, learners who were instructed in their mother tongue in the foundation phase performed better in the intermediate phase compared to learners who were taught English from the beginning of foundation phase.

In Professor Jansen’s study it has been proven that the language of instruction is an important factor of academic performance of learners, however it is not the main factor. We need to look at problems such as the levels of poverty, poor operations management at schools, the lack of skilled educators and lack of accountability throughout the school system in order to overcome and enhance quality education. 

Given the above and having read many articles and journals about this much debated topic, I believe that English as a language is important around the world.  It is viewed as a universal language that has to be grasped at all costs for a person to remain practical and useful in the modern world. In order to successfully understand English as a language, it is my opinion that English should be the language of learning and teaching from the beginning. 

Many businesses in overseas manage their meetings in English. Lecturers at universities teach their courses in English and vacationists use English as a common language across the globe. One out of five people can speak English or understand it (Insted 2015). During colonial times, British rulers repeatedly forced the people to speak English rather than their native language. Even though English as a universal language has a past, it has made an eminent mark on media, trade and other businesses.
