Task:

Project task 1:
You are required to identify an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community or tribe in your area of practice. Explore various aspects of their culture and prevailing issues affecting the community and their engagement with community services and health systems.
The project report for this task must address the following criteria, i.e. include a brief description of:
• The Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community you have identified.
• Their cultural practices and concepts including importance of dreaming.
• Importance of law in the community.
• Importance of kinship in the community
• Impacts of European settlement on this community, including: 
o Stolen generation
o Loss of land and culture.
• Political issues impacting the community.
• Historical or cultural factors or issues affecting the community.
• Social issues impacting the community.
• Economic issues impacting the community.
• Impacts of discrimination, trauma, exclusion and negative attitudes on the community.
• Factors that contribute to their ill health.
• Common diseases experienced by these groups of people.

The overall word limit for this project report is 900-1000 words.


Project task 2:
A person working in the health sector must reflect awareness of their own and other cultures in work practices. It is important for you to ensure work practices are grounded in awareness of your own cultural bias. 
The project report for this task must address the following questions:
• Reflect on your biases when working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in your area of practice (you should discuss your inclination for or prejudice against the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people).
• How does your cultural background and values impact on your interactions with people from this community?
• Discuss the critical issues that might influence your relationship and communication with these people.
• Reflect on your ability to work inclusively and with appropriate understanding of the community.
• How can you ensure cultural awareness of various concepts of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety in your work role?
• How can you demonstrate cultural competency when working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people?

The overall word limit for this project report is 400-500 words.

Project task 3:
As part of Project Task 1, you explored various issues prevailing in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in your area of practice. 
The project report for this task must address the following questions:
• How would you address these impacts when working with the community, demonstrating an understanding of your biases and limitations?
• Research and discuss the western systems and structures prevalent in your area of practice. 
• How do these western systems and structures impact on the community?
• Describe the key objectives of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Recognition Act 2013.
• Identify and briefly describe any other piece of legislation you should comply with to ensure Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety.
• Provide one (1) example each of how power relationships have been manifest in recent and in early colonial times (past and present power relations).
• Briefly describe the impact of trauma on a person’s ability for:
o Decision-making
o Communicating
o Understanding
o Retaining information

The over all word limit for this project is 800-900 words.

Project task 4:
Based on the information you gathered on their culture and prevailing issues affecting the community and their engagement with community services and health systems, you must plan a service or program with and for them. 

The service or program you plan should be relevant to their cultural practices or be a part of implementing a health promotional service or program. 

Some suggestions include:
• Celebrating NAIDOC week
• Arranging for National Sorry Day events in the community
• A suicide prevention campaign
• Health education on substance abuse etcetera.

The project report for this task must address the following questions/criteria:
• What is the service or program you are planning to implement with/for this community?
• Identify an Aboriginal community organisation in your region through which you could implement the service or program you are planning. 
• How would you establish effective partnerships with the staff at the Aboriginal community organisation in relation to implementing the service or program?
• How would you establish effective partnerships with the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities in relation to implementing the service or program?
• Identify two (2) resources you could access and use to promote partnerships between staff, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities.
• Provide an example for each resource and indicate how you would utilise these resources in the context of the service or program.
• Plan and document different ways (minimum three) to support the implementation of a culturally safe service or program to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in your region.
• Plan and document different ways (minimum three) to encourage increased participation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in your region in the service provision or program. You must include in your response how you would integrate strategies that would encourage self-determination and community control among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the implementation of the program.

The overall word limit for this project report is 450 – 550 words.

Project task 5:

Once you have decided on the service or program to be implemented for the community, you are required to:
• Set three (3) outcomes against which you could measure the cultural safety strategies.
• Decide on when you will review and measure outcomes of the cultural safety strategies you implemented for the service or program.
• Decide on methods you will use to review and measure outcomes of the cultural safety strategies you implemented for the service or program delivery.
• Decide on any two (2) strategies to involve the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in your evaluations. 
• Decide on whom you would involve in these evaluations.
