Assignment Task

AIM/RATIONALE:
In health care, no one professional can meet all of the patient’s needs and therefore a team approach is required. The purpose of this task is to encourage you to recall, reflect upon and present an example of inter-professional practice from one of your 3 rd year clinical placement experiences.

TASK INSTRUCTIONS:

For this task you need to create a ten minute narrated power-point of your experience of inter-professional practice during one of your 3rd year clinical placements. The interprofessional practice interactions can be identified at any time throughout the patient’s episode of care.

You must discuss how you and your practice partner interacted with two health professionals from the following list:

1. Dietician

2. Medical officer

3. Occupational therapist

4. Pharmacist

5. Physiotherapist/Exercise physiologist

6. Podiatrist

7. Psychologist

8. Social worker

9. Speech therapist

10. Aboriginal health practitioner

11. Aboriginal liaison officer

12. Paramedic

In your narrated power-point you must:

1) Introduce your presentation and topic and outline the patient situation.

2) Outline the roles of two different health professions (from the list above) and describe the contribution that the two health professionals made to inter-professional practice.

3) Discuss how the nurse communicated with both of these health professionals including:

a. Identify the types of information communicated between health professionals.

b. Identify a barrier to effective inter-professional practice and recommend a strategy to overcome this.

4) Provide a short summary of key points at the end of the presentation.

You may like to prepare by:

  • Talking to the health professionals about their roles
  •  Accessing this website for role clarification

Additional information:

  • You will need to ensure that your narrated power-point aligns with best practice principlesfor power-point presentations:
  •  Plan the number of slides so you can present within the allocated presentation time (10 minutes) – a rule of thumb is no more than one slide per minute. The marker will cease marking after 10 minutes.
  •  Use readable font, in a size that can be easily read
  •  Use ‘white space’ appropriately to avoid cluttered slides
  •  Have an appropriate level of detail (not too brief, not too detailed)
  •  Set-up appropriate animation and transition effects so they enhance (not detract) from your presentation;
  • Check the recording as it must be able to be heard clearly by your marker
  • Present your narrated power-point in a professional manner using the correct pronunciation of terms, professional health specific language and an audible recording.
  • You can use first person in your presentation.
  • Always refer to the Health Group Writing and Referencing Guide.
  •  Ensure that you use scholarly literature (digitised readings, research articles, relevant Government reports and text books) that has been predominantly published within the last five years. The literature should be referred within your presentation, with one of your presentation slides dedicated to your reference list.
  • You may find it useful to utilise the twelve inter-professional threshold learning outcomes(TLOs) for Griffith Health graduates (which are listed on the page following the marking criteria) to support your presentation.
  • Refer to the marking criteria when completing your assignment. This will assist you in calculating the weightings of the sections for this presentation.
