Assignment Task:

A client wishes to construct an office with open floor space, cathedral ceiling and exposed trusses. The dimensions of the structure are shown in Figure 1. The office is built from timber roof trusses and timber columns. The office is located on a hillside with an overall slope of 1 in 5. The office is located in Brisbane, Queensland.

Outline of Timber Structure Outline of Timber Structure

Assume the following wind pressures normal to the top chord of the roof and normal to the walls for the wind uplift load combination only: (a) For the strength limit state:

a. 1.4kPa uplift on both sides of the roof and 1.7kPa outward pressure on the walls. (b) For the serviceability limit state:

a. 0.5kPa uplift on both sides of the roof and 0.6kPa outward pressure on the walls.

Clearly give details of the roofing and cathedral ceiling as part of your determination of applied loads. Details of the timber used should also be given as part of the determination of member capacity.

Clearly qualify steps in your calculations.

As part of this project you are required to choose timber members, connection details and design for the following:

(a) Timber purlins,

(b) Timber roof truss members and connections,

(c) Timber Columns,

(d) Connections for the roof truss to columns and columns to foundations,

(e) Members of the timber flooring system and

(f) Illustrate using diagrams the different bracing systems for the sub-floor system, the walls and the roof.

As a structural engineer you are required to:

1. Determine the actions and resulting loads on the structure from all causes. Consider the appropriate load factors and load combinations for the member(s) under consideration. Show both the magnitude and direction of the loads using sketches.

Clearly detail the permanent, imposed wind loads and any other loads used in the sizing of members or connections.

2 Compute the values of axial forces (compression and or tension) N*, shear V*, and bending moments M* in each type of member of the structure resulting from the load cases and to be used in the member design.
