Assignment Task :

The below is a breakdown of the marks for the report. As you know, the report is a group task and so each member will receive the same mark. The only exception will be if there are some extenuating circumstances, e.g. one member of the group not participating adequately/fully throughout the term. In such a circumstance, it is down to the other member(s) of the group to bring this matter to my attention (or Rob’s). From there we can have a discussion and decide on a fair way to distribute marks.

• A maximum of 15 marks will be awarded for mathematical content, i.e. ‘is the report correct?’, ‘is the report suitable?’, ‘is the report sufficient?’ etc.

• A maximum of 10 marks will be awarded for the application aspect of the report. Roughly speaking, 0-4 marks will be awarded if very little effort has been shown (e.g. plugging numbers into matrices or Wikipedia style ‘can be used for...’ statements which lack any justification), 5-7 marks will be awarded for some clear attempt to apply linear algebra to the topic, but in which detail is lacking, or the choice of examples are uninspired. Finally, 8-10 marks will be for those groups who provide a thorough exposition of the application, or provide original and suitable examples.

• A maximum of 5 marks will be awarded for originality. This is to reward groups who demonstrate more than an ability to copy from various resources. Full marks will be awarded for imaginative and interesting applications which fully address the topic.

• A maximum of 10 marks will be awarded for logic and discussion, i.e. ‘is the report logically structured?’, ‘is there a suitable discussion of the points made in the report?’ etc.

• A maximum of 10 marks will be awarded for spelling, grammar and layout, i.e. ‘is the spelling and grammar correct?’, ‘is there an introduction and conclusion present?’, ‘are the references clearly listed alphabetically?’, ‘is the layout quite cramped?’ etc
