Census

Every 5 years, Australis undergoes a Census where data is collected from every member of the Australian population. The Census collects a range of data on the population including on topics such as income, religion, family and housing. The last Census took place in 2016. The information collected in the Census is used by the government regarding allocation of public funds and other policy decisions.

From this Census TableBuilder Guest, you can choose from the data options that you wish to investigate.

You must complete the following steps to choose your data set:

  • Choose a Census year: 2006, 2011 or 2016
  • Choose a subcategory within this year
  • Within this subcategory, it will allow you select from a predefined catalogue of data, which you must choose one
  • Before viewing and analysing the data, you must develop a hypothesis that you will test
  • Open the table of that data
  • Adjust the parameters of the data presentation (percentages by row or column, zero suppression) to best present your information
  • Print the table as a PDF or save the data in another method to use as the basis of your information, or create a table of a subset of the information
  • Decide whether using the Graphing Function on the Census website (on tool bar at top of website) or graph by different method. Save graph if using Census graphing tool.

TASK

  • Clearly state the data category of interest to you and develop a hypothesis you will test
  • Decide upon the data available to you that is relevant to answering your hypothesis
  • Isolate the relevant data and preclude non-relevant data
  • Analyse and interpret your sample data including appropriate graphs, tables, measures of centre and measures of central tendency.
  • From your analysis write an appropriate report discussing your findings.

Introduction
This is on a separate page.
Approximately 1 -2 paragraphs which describes, clearly and in your own words, the situation you are investigating.

  • Explain what you are investigating
  • Why you are investigating that topic
  • Why statistics are an important factor in investigating that topic
  • A hypothesis of your investigation.

Mathematical Procedures:

This may take several/many pages.

Discuss the mathematical procedures required to complete the task. This should include:

  • An explanation of methods used for each calculation, and why that method was used
  • An analysis of the success of methods used
  • Notation of all technology used and why that technology was used (screen shots can be included, including photos of calculator screens)
  • An analysis of tables and discuss the benefits and draw backs of using the table to present the data
  • An analysis of the statistical averages and discuss the benefits and draw backs of using those statistical averages to represent the data
  • An analysis of your graphs and discuss the benefits and draw backs of using each graph to present the data.

Mathematical Calculations and Analysis:

  • All graphs and diagrams must be done in with appropriate technology
  • Show your working out in full, where appropriate.
  • Present your gathered data in an appropriate table
  • Calculate any appropriate statistical averages
  • Present your information in appropriate graphs.
